Picture Envy

Silk grazes against my pale skin
Its soft and beautiful,
the way I use to be.
They said I was striking,
They said I was appealing.
Whispers long ago left in the dark.
Days of sweet adolescents,
gone away.
I envy my image,
from anticipated picture days.
Looking into my young eyes,
and my gut, caught up with age, cringes.
“Its not so easy anymore ya know,”
I tell him with sorrowful eyes.
“What?” he says, he doesn't realize.
He can see the beauty that I no longer see.
The young image trapped in my head.

Caressing my cheek he whispers words of love.
I blush- with young cheeks
Kissing my mouth softly,
Lips swell- with young lips.
Looking deep in my eyes,
Eyes twinkle- with young eyes.
I feel briefly like a young girl again,
experiencing my first love.
Puppy love they called it.

I close my eyes, blocking out current dissatisfaction.
He whispers my name, and tells me I'm beautiful,
the most beautiful woman in the universe.
I Smile- with a young smile
I cry- with young tears
The man however is real.
No school boy.
He loves me, not the pictures.

Reaching for the young girl,
I put her back in the box.
I look in the mirror,
the face has not changed.
With a deep breath, I try to love the image.
Just has he has loved me for me.
