Words and Verse
The Dream (Translation-Russian)
This is one of Mikhail Lermontov's more prophetic compositions. He did indeed eventually die in a way very much like the speaker of this poem.
In noon's heat, in a dale of Daghestan,
With lead shot in my breast, unstirred I lay.
My wound was deep and still kept smoking on,
My blood kept driping, drop by drop away.
I lay upon the valley's sand. The edges
Of cliffs were crowded round above my head,
The bright sun scorched their brown and torrid ledges
And scorched me,--- but I slept as sleep the dead,
I dreamt of radiant fires and evening hours
Within my native land... a feast ablaze
Amid young ladies wearing wreathes of flowers,
A merry talk concerning me took place.
But from that merry talk alone reclusing
A young girl sat there, deep within her thought,
And her young soul in melancholy musing
Was sunken and immersed...by God knows what!
In her dream lay a dale of Daghestan
Within that dale, the corpse of one she knew
Within his breast a blackening wound smoked on,
And blood coursed in a stream that colder grew.

С свинцом в груди лежал недвижим я;
Лежал один я на песке долины;
Бог знает чем была погружена;
И снилась ей долина Дагестана;
Знакомый труп лежал в долине той;
