The Dreaded Call…

We hope it will never happen,
The bad news given by phone,
And not knowing what's really happened,
As we sit at home, scared and alone.

We also dread a knock on the door,
The police standing there grim and stern,
We in fear of the news they bring,
We brace ourselves as we stand firm.

The phone call is made, the news is bad,
Oh God, what do I do?
In the dark, on the motorway my son sits,
Is he shaken, battered and blue?

The tremble in his voice, send chills…
Up and down my spine…
Only knowing what his shocked voice tells,
Not knowing if he's fine.

Sitting at the end of the phone…
With baited breath and sick inside,
Hoping he will be able to call again…
And allay the fear I can't hide!

A car crash on the motorway,
And a pile up in the night,
There he sits, as they all do,
Sick and shaking in fright!

So here I am waiting for the call,
To tell me where he is and he's okay,
I count the seconds, minutes and hours,
While my heart beats just won't stay…

Its' beating like a big brass drum,
Drowning out other sounds around,
I feel sick to my stomach,
Solace can't be found!

I a-wait impatiently, alone in the night,
For the call from my son, so far away,
A pile up…cars battered and smashed,
I need to know if he's okay…

Waiting for the call we dread…
But needing that call tonight!
All I have is fear in my heart,
For my son, alone in the dark of night!

I'm Waiting For The Call…
