A Cure for the Past

The face in the mirror
Glares back with questions
A broken soul has no answers for
There used to be smiles here
Eyes filled with hope and dreams
Memories of lost moments now fill the reflection
Of the man that once was
Once a husband
A father
A teacher
A student
A writer
So many faces
All sharing the same mirror
Now just this empty reflection remains

----Yes
----See my face
----Again
----I’m still here
----You’re still here
----They’re still here
----They
----Still
----Need
----You

Too much success
Too many parties
Too many meetings
To much reaching for the brass ring
Always looking for more
Never settling for second best
Trading valuable moments
For another chance to get rich quick
Getting everything done
And losing everything of value
Little things slipping by without a word
People stop calling
Family lost
Or look the other way
No time for them then
No time for me now

I jab the needle deeper
Trying to kill the last bit of soul that remains
A few hours bought at such a price
Knowing
Tomorrow the reflection will return again
Deep down
Praying it will all end
Before I once more remember
Who it was
I used to be

----No
----Mustn’t let go
----Must hang on
----You can be me again
----They
----Still
----Love
----You
