Words and Verse

Sing no more (Translation-Russian)

From pushkin's "Nje poj, krasavitsa, pri mnje"

I beg, dear beauty, sing no more
Your songs of Georgia. They remind me
In doleful tunes of that far shore
And of the life now lorn behind me.

Alas, anew in my mind teem,
Through tunes with ruthless cruelty laden,
That steppe, that night, that lunar gleam
On that face of the poor far maiden!...

That distant shadow, fateful, kind
When I see you, wanes dimmer for me,
But then you sing- and in my mind
Once more it wakes and flies before me,

I beg, dear beauty, sing no more
Your songs of Georgia. They remind me,
In doleful tunes, of that far shore
And of the life now lorn behind me.
