The boardwalk

What a song
what a place, you could mean Cairns
when you hummm out the tune.
Here on the boardwalk
down by the sea, don't go to the islands
the islands have come here.

Coppers everywhere the place
have counted four already
protecting us from nude bathing
and please _ no food or drink.

Walked through here the other night
at about 9.30 I think
near enough to closing time
I was carrying food and drink.

Sorry to inform you, he suggested
you have to read the signs.
Ice creams are not allowed around here
was he just passing the time.

'You're joking,' was said to the uniform,
'There's no one else here
and where's the sign that you speak of
didn't see any thanks mate.'

'Just back there where you came in,'
he pointed without checking his pace
' It's clearly marked in symbols
this sand is a special place.'

Didn't try to stitch him up
he was only doing his job
you know it's only when hair is on fire
you would think to spit in a face.

I thank him for his reminder
but it still seemed out of place
perhaps an over zealous worker
but at this time of night, please _ give me a break.

Tomorrow ends the reef festival
to the mountains I was to go
just talked to a council worker
emptying the trash out
he seemed like a nice bloke.

There will be plenty of work tomorrow
he said with a sly grin
there will be bodies like seals all over the place
when the last of the festival begins.

A quick look around
you soon get his drift
bare skin all over the place
in various states of undress.

From the colder climes they have come
migrating here most
to bare their all for vitamin A
bodies skinned like toast.

The lads stroll past
doing their part in the mating dance
on the boardwalk circuit they cruise
open to chance.

Don't think the girls don't notice
turning this side and that
now time to cool, with a splash in the pool
I wonder whose watching.

From the south east sky
drifts the frangipanni breeze
pheromones bundled up tight
over the turquoise water of this pool
bodies everywhere the place _ what a sight.

Families with their kids
well behaved are most
targeting the water with their energy
one metre deep, the deepest point.

Improved on the old one
swimming pool I mean,
the last burnt down in ‘61
used salt water from the sea.

Plan to walk this boardwalk soon
though won't go underneath
no doubt it will be late at night
when most have gone to bed.

Will include it on the nightly circuit
that keeps my blood sugar down
daily exercise for this here lad
each night he walks into town.

And will I give up icecreams
well I suppose I should
not too good for your health they say
but it's the carrot I follow, to help clean my blood.
