I created this poem right after the 9/11 tragedy.
I wanted to share my feelings of gratitude, of being able to live in a free country.
I was born in America--I will die in America
For no other place fills my heart
I've seen the worst and the best of it
And still it's my choice by far
When I see the blue of the wide open sky
and hear birds sing on my window sill
I'm reminded that this gift is mine to use
and cherish this gift I will
I have liberty although it's been tested
and I'm free to do what I please
and no outside influence will ever convince me
to not be grateful for these
My speech and ideas are not stifled
as they are in some parts of the world
I am free to salute my grand old flag
with it's glorius banner unfurled
I learned long ago the flag is a symbol
of all that's sacred to me
surely I can acknowledge it
and forever behind it I'll be
I can travel the highways or walk country lanes
admire the beauty of roses in June
I can sing praises to my God without fear of reprisal
I've seen men place our flag on the moon.
If I choose not to agree with everything said
by the leaders I sometimes doubt
I can let them know at the top of my voice
I can get my feelings out.
It may have it's problems and it may not be perfect
but it's my home and I never will leave it
I will never speak harsh words about it
and I will never, ever deceive it.
I thank God for those who keep my freedom intact
and for those who have fought and died
Yes, America's my home, my beautiful home
I will continue to love it with pride.
