Who Do I Call?I had a little accident today, I hurt my tummy and my knee! I needed it kissed better, And I need my mummy you see! But my mummy went to heaven, When I was only three! I didn't want her to go, Because I needed her here with me! So I tried to find my mummy, I need to phone her in heaven, So I phoned the operator, Cos I am only seven! I told the operator… That I need to see my mum, And told her that I fell down, And I had an aching tum! 'Can you find me the number?' I asked, 'Because you see,' 'I need my mum to make it better,' ‘She has a magic kiss for me.' 'Tell me operator...' ‘Is it in this yellow book? 'The telephone number to heaven,' ‘I can't find it when I look.' 'Operator are you there?' ‘Are you hurting too?' 'Is your mummy in heaven?' ‘Don't you know what to do?' 'Can I phone her in heaven?' ‘Do you think I will get through?' 'I really need my mummy!' ‘And I don't know what to do?' 'Oh, I found this piece of paper!' ‘Pinned high upon this wall,' 'It's for my little church,' ‘I'm going to make a call.' 'My daddy always told me,' ‘My church would help me out,' 'And I can I say a prayer to God,' ‘If ever I'm in doubt!' 'I think my daddy misses her?' ‘And he can't find Heaven for me,' 'He said that God took her away,' ‘When I was only three!' 'I sometimes see a tear…' ‘In my daddy's eye,' 'His face goes red and sad,' ‘Tnd then he will start to cry.' 'Operator I'm going now!' ‘But I hope that you feel better,' 'And if heaven doesn't have a phone,' ‘Try sending God a letter!' © Catherine Inglesby 1992 Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem |
