I had forgotten the feeling
of rocking a five pound baby--
so tiny, so precious as
I patted her bottom as
small as a rosebud and
she suckled my finger
looking up at me with
blue gray eyes.

I told the other nurses
I had forgotten how tiny
these babies seem...I
must have been gone longer
than what I thought.

Kim looked at me with
a knowing smile and
whispered, "I know...
that's the first thing
I thought after
I came back from my
maternity leave"...

And we all gathered around
her glass nursery crib as
I dressed her in her pink
dress with "princess" in
silver letters across
the tiny chest.

We all stood around the
nursery camera, five
grown women trying
to coax one tiny princess
to open her eyes.

"Come on, sweetheart,"
I whispered to her.
"Take a pretty picture
for your mommy."
She looked up at me
as if there were a
divine intervention
and though I know
better, I could swear
that she almost~

smiled.
