Words and Verse

Every Night (Translation-Galician)

This translated poem, "Cada Noite" is another dark and somber poem written by the Galician poet Rosalía de Castro who has become so dear to me in my pouring through her works and whom I have translated out of hope that some of her Galician genius might shine through in English.

Every night I cried and mourned while thinking
“This night can't be too long. It will hold.
It will hold... and it will hold...long as the
Night of pain envelopes
Me within its fold”

But the traitrous glare of constant daylight
With a treacherous blow
Every morning pierced and
Penetrated with its radiant glow
Right up to the bed where I was lying
With my grief alone.

Since then I have looked for dark that's darker
Blacker, deeper and more
But I looked in vain because through every
Night the morning stole...
Only looking through my gloomy self and
Through my darkened core,
Could I find a night that never ended,
Only in my soul.

Original:

Cada noite eu chorando pensaba...
que esta noite tan grande non fora,
que durase... e durase antre tanto
que a noite das penas
me envolve loitosa.

Mais a luz insolente do día,
costante e traidora,
cada amañecida
penetraba radiante de groria
hastra o leito donde eu me tendera
coas miñas congoxas.

Desde estonces busquei as tiniebras
máis negras e fondas,
e busqueinas en vano, que sempre
tras da noite topaba ca aurora...
So en min mesma, buscando no oscuro
i entrando na sombra,
vin a noite que nunca se acaba
na miña alma soia.
