He Wanted To Be A Soldier

He proudly walked the fine line
Wishing that he was older
For his one and only dream was...
To become a soldier

No one ever prepared him
For the battle he would face
Or the fear pounding in his heart
That nothing could erase

Not one solitary minute
Was he ever briefed or told
About the darkness of distant skies
And how the ground was so cold

Never did he once imagine
That he would go away
And now he's there and wishing
To simply return to yesterday

But every battle will someday end
A weight lifted from his shoulder
For in April he'll be coming home
To open arms for our sweet soldier
