Words and Verse
Ulysses (Translation-Italian)
By Umberto Saba
When I was young I sailed along the length
Of the Dalmatian costs where little islands
Bloomed up upon the ocean's waves, where seabirds
Suspended, hung intent above their prey,
Slippery with seaweed too, the isles like emaralds
Gleamed in the glory of the sun; and when a
Full tide and night annulled them all, then sails
Dispersed downwind and to the open ocean,
To flee deception. Now, today my realm,
-My kingdon- is this no man's land. The port
Is all ablaze for others. The untamed
Spirit still drives me to the boundless ocean,
The love of life that wears the heart away
Ulisse
Nella mia giovanezza ho navigato
lungo le coste dalmate. Isolotti
a fior d'onda emergevano, ove raro
un uccello sostava intento a prede,
coperti d'alghe, scivolosi, al sole
belli come smeraldi. Quando l'alta
marea e la notte li annullava, vele
sottovento sbandavano pių al largo,
per sfuggirne l'insidia. Oggi il mio regno
č quella terra di nessuno. Il porto
accende ad altri i suoi lumi, me al largo
sospinge ancora il non domato spirito,
e della vita il doloroso amore.
