I walk with wonder

He never wanted children,
and she tried to honor that wish
as she fingered baby socks on
her way out of Bergner's, tears
splashing down her cheeks
as the moms pushed past her
with their giggling toddlers,
tandem strollers.

Then, one night, he had a dream
about an waifish girl with blonde hair
and the most beautiful blue eyes
he had ever seen.  He held her,
laughed with her as they spun
in a field of cornflowers.

It was real, so real that
when he awoke, he cried,
knew what he had been missing.
She was no longer his, and
he never knew how much
his arms could ache.

Nine months later
(you do the math)
surrounded by nurses in mauve scrubs,
oblivious to the mechanical alarms,
the technical terms, the birthing room
full of strangers wearing paper masks...

They held each other as they
touched their baby gingerly~together-

tears, tears, tears-

and tried to explain to
the busy nurses that
they didn't know what
her first name would be yet...

but her middle name
(they shared a secret smile)
would be "Blue."
