My Place To Dream by Mayfair

You called me in the night,
upset, not feeling well...
physically, emotionally,
scared to be alone.

When I left my night-
shift job, I came to you,
crawled into your bed,
put your glasses away,
turned out your light,
tucked you in, and
slept beside you,
knowing that every time
I woke up, I could
listen to you breathe.

Sometimes when we kiss,
you let your lips
linger next to mine,
barely touching,
like butterfly wings
and you tell me
you are breathing
my breath.

I love to hear
your breath too,
sighing and whispering,
snoring deeply, your
murmurs that you make,
the rise and fall
of your chest,
the tangle of
dark hairs that
I love to
play with.

Each breath is a gift,
a miracle, along with
each beat of your heart.
Every night before
falling asleep, I pray
for God to keep you
safe, for several
more breaths to carry
you through another day.

When I worry about
losing you, I can
only sleep when our
bodies are in communion
with one another,
when every time
I move an arm,
I feel the response
of your body,
moving closer
into me, aware
even in your sleep.

We respond to each other,
breath for breath,
heartbeat for heartbeat,
and I thank God
every day for
the miracle, the
preciousness...

of breath.
