ALONG CAME A RECLUSE

I’ve been afraid of spiders since I was a child,
My family and friends often became riled;
They said I acted stupid over a little bug,
Whether it dangled from a web or darted across a rug;

I was bitten by a spider--such a horrible thing!
Strange as it seems, though, I didn’t feel it sting,
I saw a little bump, thought it was a mosquito bite,
But it soon turned into a very nasty site;

Not only ugly, but painful as well,
The whole area around it began to swell,
It was discolored and infected and hot to the touch,
I never dreamed a little bite could hurt so much!

After days of suffering my doctor said this abuse
Was the result of the attack of a brown recluse,
I could have the last word, tell everyone I was right,
But I’d have felt so much better not to have that spider bite!
