THE TALE OF FRIEDA MOGAL

A GREAT PLAINS SAILOR SPEAKS

Well, for many years I've sailed restively on the
   ocean waves which have weathered my bod,

Having seen the world, my aging mind and heart now
   long to be back on rolling prairie sod.

Yes, salt water has wrinkled my tattooed old skin;
   now absence from home is causing me pain,

My aging soul now longs not for rolling salt waves,
   but for blowing waves of ripe amber grain.

I want to breathe the freshest of salt-free warm air
   and go lake-water fishing once in a while,

Hurricanes and typhoons could not worry me again,
   for only tornadoes are in the prairie style.

Although I long ago wearied of wet ocean graves,
   I long for a home near the grain's amber waves!
