I have often wondered just how people go about naming their pets.
There is an interesting story about how my dog got his name:
I hope you find a little love here;
God gives
unconditional love----
and a dog gives unconditional love.
That's probably why
"God" spelled backward is "dog".
Mon Ami (my poodle) was named for the
original Mon Ami---a dog I didn't even own. The original Mon Ami was a
chocolate brown toy poodle belonging to my sister, Leone. Everyone in my
family loved that dog !!!!! He was personality personified !!!!! He could
"laugh like Jerry", loved to play "tug of war" with Doris and his newspaper
toy, would run to the refrigerator if anyone said "ice cream", which he
loved. He could "sit pretty", take a small bite from your hand and never
slurp a finger in the process. He is the only dog I have ever known my
"hard-headed husband" to risk a blizzard to rescue from his kennel when
Leone couldn't make it home. He sent and received mail. He was always
happy to see you, and let you know it. He was Leone's dog. He worshiped
the ground she walked on. He slept under the covers of her bed. He knew
the way to "Grandma's House". You could literally drive for hours and he
would rest comfortably----until you turned down the alley to "Grandma's
House". I'll never know how he knew that alley from any other street or
alley we traveled on ! But he got old, almost 12 in dog years, and had
heart problems. He needed Lasix, and we all sympathized with him because we
knew----we took Lasix too. Leone had to have surgery, and Mon Ami came to
stay with Grandma and me. He hobbled to the house, looking at me as if to
say---Aunt Karen, I'm so tired---but Mom needs me a while longer. Renee was
with Leone when Mon Ami finally passed away.
He struggled so valiantly---for so long----that Renee asked Leone to leave
the room because she thought he could never die with Leone watching him.
After Leone said her good-byes and went to the living room to cry, he
peacefully slipped away. It's over ten years ago----and the tears still run
as I tell about him.
I loved that dog.
And I love my Mon Ami.
