A Time Long Gone

For a brief moment, in a time long gone,
I believe you loved me, at least a little.
Never as much as I loved you, but enough.
Enough to make me happy.
And as much as you could.

I thought if I waited
That someday you would love me...
Love me as fully and completely
And joyously and recklessly as I loved you.

I waited for you to love me.
And I waited for you to love me.
And, then, I waited for you to love me.

I waited for you to find yourself.
I waited for you to search for your soul,
And fight your devils,
And find your anchors
And glean your answers.

And, finally, when you said
The puzzle pieces fit,
When you told me of your dreams,
And all the places you would go,
I waited for the earth to swallow me, whole.

In your excitement I guess you missed that
Not one dream, not one journey included me.
