Where are you?
You used to be so full of life
Smiling, teasing, hugging
All those times you and I spent
Snuggling together on a chair
Writing poems and doing puzzles

And now you lay there
Barely covered by a sheet
In a skimpy hospital gown
With tubes going and out of your body
And the machines beeping, and the IV tubes dripping
In a dark, glass-covered room

Where are you?
You come in and out of consciousness
Drinking liquid with help, to quench your thirst
With hands and feet tied down to the bed
You look at me and beyond me
"Who are you? I don't remember you," you say

I stood there, smiling bravely
As my heart was breaking
You may be there in a physical form
Yet, your mind has gone far away
Where have you gone? I wonder
I stood, like a stranger, in the room

Where are you?
Where have you gone?
Will you ever come back?
Will you ever recognize me?
I long for you to once again say
"This is my favorite spoiled brat"

A World War II pilot
A Penn State University graduate
A farmer, a high school teacher,
A brother, an uncle,
A husband, a father,
And a doting grandfather

You have played a big part in my life
A poet, you have turned me into
Also a lover of words and education
Alzheimer's disease may have taken you away
Yet forever, you will remain in my heart
And that is where you are, Pap
