Opening the door
To a funeral home
The face of my grandfather
Came into view right away
All tucked away by a wall
Inside a black-silver coffin
Impossible... utterly impossible...
I approach slowly,
The flowers were flowing around
And on the top of the open coffin
As my grandfather's eyes
Were eternally closed in peace
With his hand atop one another
Impossible... utterly impossible...
His wedding band gleamed,
Tying him to his wife forever
I gaze at my grandfather
In a dark suit, with a white shirt,
And a blue and red tie,
His head nested on a pillow
Impossible... utterly impossible...
People flowed in and out, paying their respect,
As family members sobbed and hugged,
Talking among themselves quietly
As my grandfather laid there
In his coffin, oblivious to the world,
For his soul has long gone
Impossible... utterly impossible...
After a prayer service,
We lined up to see him for the last time
Touching him, kissing him,
And whispering some words of love
As the blanket came above his waist
And was tucked under his chin
Impossible... utterly impossible...
The coffin was closed for the last time
And packed into a hearse by a group of men
As we started a slow, short procession
To the cemetery, his final resting place,
My eyes following the hearse in a daze
His last ride in a vehicle, down that road
Impossible... utterly impossible...
The grave was already dug, six feet deep,
Awaiting for its' new resident
His body, merely an empty shell,
Never to be seen again by any of us
As the American flag, honoring him,
Was folded and handed to his wife of 55 years
Impossible... utterly impossible...
An hour later, his coffin was sheltered by earth
With flowers covering the fresh grave
I stood there, blinded with grief,
As memories flooded my head
And my heart ached with loss and sorrow
I had really lost my grandfather physically
Impossible... utterly impossible...
