 Musings by The Poet Loriet

Four Hours of Needled Prose

I hadn't had time to think about it, to get nervous.  We ate at the Mexican Grill, drank margaritas in the middle of the afternoon, bought lilac candles, listened to Santana, smelled roses, sat on the seat of the motorcycle we dreamed about buying and driving to Chicago on, but then it was time...tattoo time...time for you to go back to your place after a week of heaven, time for me to keep my appointment, time for us to say goodbye for now.
We listened to Santana with the windows down, tasting the end of freedom as you played the song that you said reminded you of me, the one you said you played over and over again the night before until you fell asleep and I faintly remembered dreaming to the melody.
I put on your favorite white lace panties and you teased me about wearing them for "him" after wearing my old granny panties for you and I giggled.  "I'd do the same thing for my gynecologist, honey, and she's a woman."
I straddled the chair at the tattoo parlor as he told me to "sit the way your mother always told you not to" and I unbuttoned my jeans as he muttered, "Why do you women always have to wear those damn sexy white lace things here?" I told him about our conversation and that you already teased me about my choice of panties. He sighed, "Don't say the word ~panties~ It sounds so naughty."
So, it was beautiful when you called to tell me to come over afterwards and bring our favorite movie so we could watch it again with your boys and...he grabbed the phone and said, "Let me talk to him.  Those are some damn sexy panties your girl wore for me!"  He made me laugh and I talked to him about you.
Four hours and he wouldn't let me peek.  I clenched my fists and wiggled my toes and sipped the cool drink he brought me. We talked about life and Zen philosophy and books and art...and you finally showed up to see where I was at.
Four hours and he charged me a third of what he should have~and after all that time, you became my eyes...telling me it was the most beautiful tattoo you ever saw~and as I turned around to see it, I knew I had been touched by a true artists' hands.
It was more beautiful than I had ever imagined~looked like an authentic scene straight out of an Australian rainforest~a beautiful exotic lorikeet bird peeking out of a canopy of lush green leaves, vines of white and lavender flowers floating softly around the edges.  He told me he used to own a lorikeet bird and just tried to make it look like her.
This lorikeet bird that I now own belongs to you~I spent one last night with you at your place and this tattoo will always remind me of the final four hours of the week we spent tying up loose ends, the week that we finished falling in love, the week where this freebird finally found a heart, a nest~ to call home.
I love you.
