They Didn't Know

They didn’t know
That he started sniffing model glue and paint
At the age of eight
They didn’t know
That by ten
He had started sniffing gasoline
They didn’t know
That before he was thirteen
He had started breaking in
To other people’s houses
To look for money
Or something that he might sell
To buy drugs
They didn’t know about the bags of pills
That he took to Junior High
Or about the briefcase of pills
That he hid in the closet
When he was in High School
They didn’t know
About the bags of marijuana
He had in his dresser
Or the bricks
That he later hid in the attic

No they didn’t know
All of these things
And more
Partially because
They weren’t prepared to find out
And because
I didn’t tell them
He was my older brother you know

To this day
I really don’t know
Who I felt that I was protecting most
Him
Or them

To this day
I still wonder
If it would have made that much difference
If I had told

To this day
I wish that I had found some way
For them to find out

What they didn’t know
