Heart Of The Matter

When Monica Fell In A Puddle

When Monica fell in a puddle,
She knew then that she'd be in trouble,
She was told to keep her best clothes clean,
And would have done so, if the puddle she'd seen.

To her it didn't look too deep,
She didn't know the step was steep,
And how was she supposed to know,
She'd end up soaked from head to toe.

The puddle took her by surprise,
And all you could see were the whites of her eyes,
The mud and water so cold, made her shiver,
And the thought of her Mother was making her quiver.

She knew she'd be grounded at least for a week,
And for a while she just stood there unable to speak,
She realised that she, had to find an excuse,
A good one at that, for she'd just cooked her goose.

She dragged herself home, now dripping dry,
And feeling so wretched she started to cry,
Her mother stood there, rage coloured her face,
And Monica, head bowed, just stood in disgrace.

Her mother demanded “Just what's happened to you”,
And Monica noticed the air turning blue,
She had to think quickly, mother having a fit,
It wasn't my fault, the big boys made me do it.
