Windmills of Your Mind by Mayfair

Maternity Nurse Abecedarian

At the desk,
they brandish ink pens,
chatter about doctor's orders.

Everyone at some point
fumbles instruments
under garish exam lights
in the heat of the moment.

I try not to jump
at three a.m.
when kangaroo-like,
a doctor lunges unexpectedly
through the double doors.

Menthol and nicotine nurses
watch opal-eyed thru blue masks
as pregnant patients push.

Queens in mauve scrubs,
real-life heros, delivery room
superstars in scrubs
carry telfa bandages, tenaculums...

Hi, my name is Ursula.
I wear umber underwear.
My husband is understanding
about my work schedule
and I'm bringing my uvula
to the picnic.

Undulating fetal heart tones
vie for attention...
Waves of life~
X and Y chromosomes
Zip across the graph
and into Ursula's
awaiting gloved
fingers.
