Musings by The Poet Loriet
How Could You?
Those are the words you asked me,
"How could you?"...
How could I have taken
your sleeping pills
when you were upset?
I worried that tonight,
you would take too many.
I know that's not my choice.
I just couldn't imagine
ever losing you, and
because of that simple act
in a moment of panic,
I have done just that.
In return, I want to ask...
how could you?
How could you hate me
like you do after
all that we shared?
How could you?
When all I ever wanted...
was to love you.
And I did in the
only way I know how...
I guess I was always
one mistake away
of losing you,
and it's better
to know now.
I thought you were
my forever, the one
who would hold my
gnarled ninety-year old
hand in the aisle
grocery-shopping.
How could you?
