My Girls Watching Over Me

This is going to start out
sounding like a very bad cliche',
but give me a moment to add emotion,
to gather my thoughts...for this
is a poem about girlfriends,
and how they are so awesome
when one is suffering
from a broken heart.

Tonya called me to
pick up some cigarettes
on the way to work,
and I burst into tears.
She said, "You should
have called me, Lori.
I would have came to you."

I got to work and tried
to avoid Stacey's eyes,
but she knew...and when
I didn't come out of
the locker room for
forty-five minutes,
she came in and found me,
sitting barefoot and
Indian-style on the tile floor,
still in my jeans and bra.

She crouched down with me
and said, "Okay, talk...
I am listening..."
She used cliche' words,
about me looking in a
favorite chair and he
wasn't there anymore
(I think she got that
off a funeral ad)...
but she was trying.

Judy, the nursing supervisor,
was making her rounds and
sat down next to me,
"I'm waiting until
you're ready to talk, Lori.
Something is wrong and I'm
a very good listener."

The rest of them let me pretend,
at least for a little while,
even though they all knew...
until I broke down into
shoulder-shaking sobs
and couldn't pretend to
be working anymore.

Katie rushed to my side,
"Oh, Lori honey, don't.
I heard~we all did,
and if you start crying,
you're going to break my heart",
and God bless her, she sat down
and listened to me blubber
and cried right along with me.
Judy hugged me, Katie...
touched my hand.

Katie assessed all my patients,
answered all the call-lights.
Marlo said in her lilting voice,
"Flowers~come come, my little
puss-puss...come join our
sewing circle~bring your
cross-stitch. It's good therapy."

She wrapped a warm blanket
around my shoulders and
Lori served me apple pie.
Tonya brought me chocolate
with a note, "I still love you"
and she said, "He won't be able
to just forget you, Lori.
Nobody loves like you do."

Katie made me drink water,
"You're crying too much.
You'll get dehydrated...
And most importantly,
they never left my side
for one moment...
They got me through
one of the hardest nights
of my life, and each day,
I cry just the tiniest bit less.

I know that my girls
are going to make sure
that I make it through this.
I am not alone,
even though in moments
where I'm by myself
in an empty house,
it feels like it...
but not with my girls,
never
with my girls.
