They sat on cushions
around the chiminea
on her back deck,
and offered me the chair
"for you are the queen tonight~
Did you bring the picture?"
I held it in my hands
as Ashley went through
her own pictures and
asking to see them,
I chose one of her ex
in a black tuxedo because
"he should be cremated
in his Sunday best"...
I threw "his" toothbrush
in the fire first and Mary
turned her cheek away, saying,
"I cannot watch this, you know.
If you tell anyone I took part
in burning a toothbrush..."
(I had forgotten she's a
dental hygienist)!
Then it was time for
the burning of his picture.
I held off and talked
about the stars, the weather,
then tossed it in not
ready to let go yet,
willing it to come back...
And the strange thing was,
it did come back! The picture
appeared to jump out of the fire
as if hooked to an imaginary
rubber band and it flew
right back into my hands.
We all stared at each other
and gulped hard...
Did you just see that?
I said, "Ummmm, maybe
that's an omen, guys.
Maybe this isn't the
right thing to do",
but before I could
think, Ashley said she
would do the honors,
and Mary said, "Right thing
to do or not...you are
a strong woman~and not
going to sit around
waiting for him to
get his head on straight.
We need to do this tonight."
Ashley tossed the picture into
a bright orange flame and
the edges turned black,
curled up, and within seconds,
I could no longer make out
the features of his face.
I stared into the fire
as we sat quietly...and Mary
told me about the single guy
that lives on our street.
We started planning a
dinner party to
introduce us...
She said he was nice
and not too hard on the eyes.
We drew our arms around us
and sat quietly watching
the fire die down as
the night air became chilly.
I got up to get ready for work
and they gave me hugs...
We all agreed.
It needed to be done.
And we did it...
together.
