Heart Of The Matter

Friend

I saw my friend just yesterday,
We planned to watch the pipe bands play,
A sad lament, some stirring lilts,
All dressed in tartan, men in kilts.

And then we had a change of plan,
My friend being one, who understands,
That what I needed on the day,
Was somewhere quiet, not faraway.

I picked her up and talked a while,
She made me laugh and made me smile,
We set off for my special place,
The sun shone warm upon our face.

We walked along the sandy shore,
I'd walked so many times before,
The sky was blue, sea turquoise green,
Children swimming, set the scene.

My worries melted clean away,
So glad we're both free for today,
Our problems pooled and simply shared,
We ate the picnic she prepared.

We had a walk around the town,
The place I'd love to settle down,
It's always looked the same you see,
This harbour town, down by the sea.

And as we made our way back home,
I realised, I'm not alone,
I have a friend, I know she'll care,
And if I need her, she'll be there.
