ONE DAY AT A TIME

 MY PIANO

There's a place where my piano stands alone,
Now just a piece of furniture with a history of its own,
With no one to strike those keys of ebony and ivory,
It is haunted midst the halls of a dwelling I once lived in.

As a young girl, I began memorizing one key at a time,
Striving on my own, with no influence or praise from others.
A classical piece "The Blue Danube" is still a favorite,
And  "Waltz of the Flowers" followed with all its grace,

Chopin's "Polonaise" became the biggest challenge,
But with much practice, was polished to the fullest,
Only to fade away, when it was ceased to be heard,
Or was it unheard by souls who had no desire to listen?

"Two Guitars will be played on one piano," was announced,
As the young girl slowly made it to center stage at a recital,
Gazing at the sheet music in front of me, as if frozen in time,
Realized it was upside down, then played on with perfection.

A violinist offered me and my piano to perform as a duet,
This I thought I could never accomplish, yet was proven wrong!
The many hours spent practicing hard to reach precision,
Paid off handsomely, as we were certified with "Excellence."

Recognition sought for others to hear my gifted knowledge,
Was scarcely acknowledged within the halls of the dwelling.
Interruptions while practicing became far too frustrating,
And as fury grew stronger, the melodies faded to be heard.

The young girl grew up, lessening the lessons of perfection,
As the player moved on, the instrument remained at its location.
The longing to play my piano became harder to bare,
I can no longer visit my piano, for it too is a ghost in the dwelling.

Longing to be heard should not be a plea, but desire from others,
For those who have respect for the musician, should do so freely.
I now play an electrical keyboard, with many aspects of sound,
But nothing will ever replace My Piano I someday wish to retrieve.

A piano is one of many instruments that can wither away,
Only if allowed by the musician to do so, as time goes by.
