Heart Of The Matter

And Who Are You?

And who are you? I thought I heard him say,
The words dispatched completely out the blue,
He doesn't seem to know the time of day,
I'd seen the signs before, though somewhat few,

A distant look befalls in clear blue eyes,
And wounds me like a knife cut through my heart,
The love I feel, he fails to recognise,
The life I share with him now torn apart,

“I must go home, she's waiting there for me,
The children wait for bedtime lullaby,
She'll worry for I'm never late for tea”,
I steel myself determined not to cry.

The children grown and he has lost his way,
And who are you? I thought I heard him say.
