Childhood Friend
Can you remember when,
that old dilapidated covered
bridge crossed Flat creek?
Can you remember when,
we were all young with
bright rosy cheeks?
Can you remember when,
we raced our bicycles as
fast as we could in the
hot summer wind?
Can you remember when,
we were all about ten?
We were so young,
we hadn’t yet committed
our first sin.
Can you remember when,
our young lives were free
as an eagle soaring high
in the azure blue sky?
Can you remember when,
we’d eat licorice sticks
until our tongues would
turn black and totally
empty that candy sack?
Can you remember when,
we laid on our backs in the tall
grass, watching the puffy white
clouds change shapes so fast?
Can you remember when we
played cork ball in the middle
of Sixth Street, the old swimming
hole on Flat creek?
Can you remember those day
long gone by, those were the
childhood days that will never
be forgotten by you and I,
my old friend until we die!
