You tease me when I come home,
ask me if I slaved all night over hot babies
as I crawl out of scrubs, into pajamas
and fall asleep, too tired to even
close my eyes...but I am aware
of you tucking me in as I
smile in my slumber.
I wake to the smell of
honey-glazed chicken
and to my children's hugs.
I don't have to ask them
if their homework's done.
You've already taken care
of all the daily details.
I got my paycheck today,
and you asked for money
to have some beers with the boys
after your son's school band concert.
You ask with big pretty eyes and
take me in your arms,
kiss me hard and take

You know I can't
even begin to say
the word "no".
You have made our house
into a home once again,
as we weave two families
into one special blend.
I would give you my
last dime if you promised
to do one thing for me.
I don't think I could survive
getting my heart broken again,
falling out of love, dividing
movies, books, furniture,
pictures, and groceries.
Don't ever make me do that again.
(Please stay...)
I know that we
can give love
a second chance.
We both thought that
we found forever love once.
Maybe life consists of
more than one
