It's All About…

This next poem was inspired by the fact they were going to close a vital facility down…Shop Mobility, affectionately known as Shop Mo…or, The Dippy Centre!

It is a voluntary organization and dependant on funding! We do things to help fund it.  We have scooter and wheelchair sponsored 'runs!'  The local council part fund us too, but this year...2004, they ‘forgot!!' Had this ‘electric scooter, and wheelchair' hire shop closed; many, many people would become once more – housebound!  It was not going to happen, not in my lifetime!  So we fought it, we had to fight the good fight, and we did, and we won!!!  We submitted a 10,096 signature petition!!  They almost fell of their chairs in the chambers where a full head council was meeting!!!  The closure wouldn't affect me, because I have my own electric chair, but as I say, most don't, most depend on hiring them!!

As for the petition...No-one can go against public opinion on that scale!  In 5 weeks alone, in our little shopping centre in Wirral, we collected those signatures!  As I said to the powers that be…

'People Power can move mountains!!'  We just proved that!!!!

Prisoners In Our Own Mind?  NO WAY!!!

And now, the poem;

It's All About…

It's all about independence,
And the right to go outside,
Not live indoors, not to be a recluse,
And not to be sad and hide!
Life is all about, Really…
Being as happy as we can be,
So that is why, it's a vital facility,
This wonderful ‘Shop Mobility!'

So I thought I'd give recognition,
Because I wanted to give them praise,
May the Shop Mobility forevermore,
Last for all of our days!
We all meet up almost every day,
For a gang of friends are we…!
And we wouldn't be able to do that,
Without the fantastic Shop Mobility!

Everyone who uses the facility -
Has, as you will agree…
A little problem getting out and about,
Because we're all disabled you see!

…BUT…

We don't need to be locked up in prison,
To allow our heart and mind to be closed,
For we and only we have the power,
To curl up and die like a withered rose!
If we have negativity in life,
And are governed by our health,
Then all we do is cause heartache,
And a pain beyond all wealth!

Disability is only disabling,
If we allow it to be so,
So we don't allow it, we shake it off,
And let the positive feelings flow!
So you see, it's a bit like this!
Without the Shop Mobility that we use,
We'd be prisoners of someone's making,
Because our independence we would lose!

‘Don't be a prisoner in your own mind!'
Is what I tell to all those I know!
For we are human, we feel pain and hurt,
And that's something that shouldn't be so!
‘Prisoners In Our Own Mind!'  Nope, not at all!
For we certainly are...free!
But that would change in a heartbeat,
If we didn't have the shop mobility!

So this little rhyme is especially to say,
I want to give you praise,
May Shop Mobility forever thrive!
And be with us for all of our days!

And because we have the Shop Mobility

We will never be Prisoners In Our Own Mind!
