Bora born

A sign of things to come _

The Radisson is now the Shangrila
or is it still called the Pier
which ever way, what better way
to show what's happening here.

The rainforest is now gone
at the entrance to the foyer
new owners want that sterile look
cold granite slabs to bore you.

They are the elite of the world
little heart, so they say
cold hard light, less inner sight
mainly dollars pave their way.

That forest cost one million dollars
fifteen years ago
a beautiful sight to captivate
the locals then on show.

The mayor of cairns called it alkatraz
rob godwin was his name
ten thousand strong, gathered in song
on the esplanade that day.

Once a labour stronghold
the state's treasurer came from here
there was a time we had peace of mind
the pace of life was fair.

Where are the characters
from around this place
most have passed away
less time to talk
and walk the walk
or give the time of day.
