Heart Of The Matter

If Only They Could See Me Now

If only they could see me now,
That quiet child, lost in a crowd,
The one who never made a sound,
Oblivious, to all around.

If only they could see me now,
The ones who called me names, out loud,
The ones who laughed,
At one who cried,
Bravado shown, yet terrified.

If only they could see me now,
The bully-boys,
Who call me coward,
And beaten senseless,
In despair,
And cut and shorn,
Her long, blonde hair.

Humiliated, out of reach,
And somehow lost,
The power of speech,
And spirit broke,
Beyond repair,
They laugh, and leave her,
Lying there.

A tortured child,
Inside a shell,
So long ago,
They taught her well,
Those memories,
Oh, how they last,
The acrid taste of a bitter past.

For now she's strong,
She turned her cheek,
Her hair still blonde,
Now long a sleek,
A woman now,
She's in demand,
And childless, Yes,
You understand.

They look at her, and ask her, how,
If only they, could see me now.
