A Long Night's Journey Into Day
Collapse - To O.C.S. on 9/11/01
It was a beautiful day,
a cloudless sky,
the end of summer
when your world came down.
I often wonder what you thought
in that final moment
before the walls fell inward
crushing all you knew...
Where was your mind
that second,
when the routine lasped away
and the innocence in you
went up in flames?
were you smoking a cigarette,
were you napping in the stairwell?
I know sometimes you did that
when you couldn't stay awake.
I think about that day
and wish you far away
to never know
that crippling pain...
But that horror
came to find you
leaving anguish
on your face,
death inside your eyes;
A broken angel
in your place.
You walk inside
a nightmare -
haunted by sentiment,
tortured by images,
burdened by a loss
I hope time will erase.
There is nothing in this world
I wouldn't give
to see you happy always
and know that when
I see you next -
Your face will hold that light,
Your eyes will bear your soul,
Your mind will be alright.
You'll know that your alive
not just because your breathing
but because the day is beautiful
and you are standing in it.
If I could cradle
all your madness,
heal your wounds,
make you feel...
I know you will return
from hell.
If I could use
your head as mine
I might make you see
outside of all this sadness
you have taken hold of me.
I have so many prayers
for you -
Unknown,
sometimes you look at me
and all the while
I'm dreaming of
the man I used to know...
who strolled into the room
with a smile,
and a beer,
and a heart -
But he's no longer here.
a cloudless sky,
the end of summer
when your world came down.
I often wonder what you thought
in that final moment
before the walls fell inward
crushing all you knew...
Where was your mind
