Giving Birth

 Tiger Blonde by Mayfair

Her belly hung beneath her
as smooth as a white mares,
softly rounded with child.
She raised to hands, knees,
pushing without a sound,
stoic, quiet, and we stood
around her bed, not speaking,
unable to break the reverie.
Only her doula whispered
in the dark room, the words
"awesomeawesomeawesome"
like a mantra, the baby's hair
darkening her loins with
each strong silent push.
Her midwife asked me
for warm water and
gently cleansed her
with green earth soap
between contractions.
I stood at the warmer,
not wanting to turn
oxygen on and test suction,
ambu bags, delees...
Somehow, I knew this baby
was going to be okay,
and the delivery room
was their church...
and we were all praying.
The silence was broken
by a single cry of pain
as she climbed to the
head of the bed and
bit down on the
top of the mattress.
One strong yet gentle push
for the baby's head,
and one more for her body,
and a baby girl
entered the world,
just in time to lay
under the white lights
of a Christmas tree
on a blanket with
her mother as the
virgin smiled down
from Heaven...
a new life, still pure.
She gave birth to
Hope.
