What Do You See?

You know, a few months ago in my local shopping centre...
a man approached me and snarled;

'You have no right to live, you shouldn't be here!'

Awww, you know what I think?

The poor man has an allergic reaction to wheelchairs!
Cos his comments sure beat the hell outa me!

But hey!  I laughed!!!

It seems to me that the disabled person...
Is not always the one in the chair!

And so...the poem:

***What Do You See***

What do you see, when you look my way?
The person I am or the wheelchair I'm in today?
Don't ask the question not looking at me,
I have ears and a voice, look and you will see!

Don't talk looking away but look at me and see,
That I am the person, the wheelchair's not me!
Don't undermine me, my mind isn't dead,
I am a person of worth, it has to be said.

Don't look away as you speak to me!
Look into my eyes tell me what you see
Do you see me, or the chair I'm in?
Please don't insult me, my patience wears thin.

I am a good strong person of stature and worth
My life's as precious as yours as I walk Gods earth!
I stand proud and tall and stand out in the crowd,
For the person I am, for that is allowed.

Don't treat me like nothing, like a nonentity,
The chair isn't the person, the person is me!
So as you pass me by, don't turn away
Look me in the eyes and throw a smile my way.

I am worthy of being treated just like you,
And treated with respect like I'm entitled to!
So look into my eyes as you chat to me,
And tell me again, what is it you see?

People who know me know my worth,
As I happily wonder through God's good earth.
They look in my eyes this is what they see,
Not the chair I'm in, but the person, that's me!

They like my personality, they like my humour,
Look out here she comes, she's mad - is the rumour!
The rumour that is me, as I float about,
Yes, it's me that they like there is no doubt!

So to strangers I meet and strangers I see,
Don't talk to the chair, but rather, talk to me!
Don't look over my head, but into my eyes,
For there you will see, the person it belies,

I am proud of me, and what I'm about,
Me the person, who uses a chair to get out!
So judge me not by insulting my integrity,
All I ask is for you, to see the person, that's me!

Don't be embarrassed, for I assure you I don't bite,
Well let's be honest, it would be such a sight!
Attacked by a person as she sits there in smile,
And as I sail through life, I will do it in style!

The chair is a bonus, I am independent you see,
For it's just like 'your' legs, the chair sets 'me' free!
