Sitting alone late one night
a bad feeling came over me
I walked over to a window
to see what I could see
Flames blazing in the sky
from my neighbors home
please dear God I prayed
don't let them be at home
I quickly dialed 911
and when that was done
I grabbed my shoes and coat
and took of in a run
As I was running
a scream pierced the night
it urged me on much faster
and filled me with such fright
When I reached the yard
windows exploded in showers of glass
I had to go around
find a safer route to pass
Then I heard another scream
"Help, my Dad's in there
I searched God I searched
I couldn't find him anywhere"
Flames burning out of control
seared power lines danced in the air
I heard the sirens in the background
Firemen would soon be there
The boys shirt was in tatters
I helped cut it from his back
I'll never forget the sight or smell
as skin fell away charred black
He was oblivious to the pain
his Dad was his only thought
The firemen tried to get in
but the flames couldn't be fought
I'd never felt so helpless
as I did on that night
knowing a friend was trapped inside
as I stood in that fires scorching light
It seemed like many hours
before the flames burned down
many friends and family
had gathered all around
The coroner finally arrived
thats when I hurried home
I didn't want to see anymore
I knew my friend was gone
Walking home in a daze
I could still hear that scream
praying for someone to wake me
from this awful dream
Once alone in my home
I let my tears fall free
I knew the fire in the night
would forever haunt me.

This sadly is a true story, it happened in 1985, and sometimes when I see a fire or hear a siren, I can still hear that piercing scream, I'll never forget it.
