Love Letters

He sits, huddled beside the fire. His camouflage, heavy from the rain, torments his already weak body. His frozen hand clenches the pen found within his numb fingers. He tries desperately to cover the paper with his body. It shakes in rhythm to his shivering. The tears begin to swell in his eyes. He forces them back. His heart aches at the thought of never seeing his beloved again. His words flow like the tears escaping his eyes. They are words of immeasurable love, of unending longing, and of desperate pleas to be with her. As he writes, the memories of her dance in his mind. Visions of her soft yellow hair, of her eyes so blue you could lose yourself in them, of her never-ending smile, of every little detail of her, filled his head. His spirit cries out for her, but she cannot hear it. How can she? He pictures her, sitting comfortably beside the fireplace, reading and rereading the hundreds of letters he has sent her and crying softly to herself. “I will come back to you soon”, his heart whispers. He reaches into his pocket and pulls forth a pink envelope. He opens it and retrieves the letter. The beautiful letters that fill the page remind him how much he is loved. He holds the paper with such care. And as his heart fills with pain, he smells the perfume that engulfs the letter. Gently, he returns the letter to it's place, and continues with his own. The tears fall from his check, carrying with them the dirt and soil of the field. They fall to the paper, smearing the words as they land. Carefully, he wipes them away and rewrites the letters they have taken. As he draws near the last of his paper, he ends his letter with the same sentences of hope and love as the many previous ones: “I love you my sweet Sarah! Wait for me, my darling, and I will wait for you! Lovingly Yours, Private John Riley.”
