This is "tax time" for us. We have been compiling records for our tax accountant, reviewing last year's activities and expenditures in the process. It is really something to look at how much our calendar, checkbook register and credit card statements reveal about what we value. If someone were to look at how you spend your time and money, what would they conclude really matters to you?
Jesus' words reveal the enormous degree of freedom God entrusts to us. Not only do we have the opportunity to seek out and gather treasures, but it's up to us to decide whether to pursue what is temporal and fleeting, or what is eternal. This present world loudly and seductively promotes its treasures; heaven's treasures are not so readily apparent. The choices are not always easy to make.
Jesus, our Teacher, tells us that we will find our heart– the center of our being–encircled and molded by the things we have chosen to treasure. May we each choose to pursue the relationships and activities that bring us a more Christ-shaped heart. And, may the investments of our time and money be ones that pay dividends eternally!
Amen.
