The Hermit

SultryRose's Signatures

There's a house upon the hill
I've been dared to enter
shaking head to toe as if
its the dead of winter.

I finally cross the threshold
there's cobwebs in my face
its been told for years
a ghost haunts this place

Floorboards are creaking
wind whistles through the cracks
old furniture still in place
sheets thrown across the backs

Proceeding quite as a mouse
I go from room to room
fear is over taking me
within this awful gloom

I start to climb the stairway
there's a noise to my right
was it just imagination
that filled me with such fright

No it sounds like music
or perhaps a ghostly hum
I can't seem to figure out
where its coming from

I move in that direction
overlooked this spot before
this leads to the basement
I  press my ear to the door

I slowly turn the knob
there's music playing low
and now I see a light
softly glowing down below

Then a voice rings out
what are you doing here
I stand like a statue
my body gripped in fear

As my eyes adjust
I see an old mans face
He says tell me young man
what are you doing in this place

With my shaky voice
I explain the college dare
the old man smiles and says
there are no ghosts I swear

I live here like a hermit
my families all long gone
for death has its own way
of leaving one all alone

Couldn't bare the upper floors
where we used to dwell
I simply craved the solitude
of this little makeshift cell

But from time to time
I roam those empty halls
in rapture with the memories
that are captured in these walls

I'm weary and I'm waiting
as the light burns down low
for fate to call my name
and say its time to go

I looked at this old man
found I couldn't speak
with a lump in my throat
a tear rolled down my cheek

He said tell your friends
no ghost was to be found
I'm just a lonely old hermit
thats tired of hanging round

As I reached the upper floor
laughter filled the air
the light that was softly burning
was no longer there

A rush of warmth hit me
all my fear long  gone
and that weary old Hermit
now was not alone
