Nawleans

My mom held an alligator
down in New Orleans,
told me over my cell phone
how soft his belly was.

She said your father and I
always think of you when we're here,
the live jazz bands, couples walking
with glasses of wine on the street,
artists selling their paintings,
poets, performers, magicians
with their hats set out for tips,
voodoo in the air...

She said if you ever
get married again, honey,
you should come here
for your honeymoon.
You would love it!

I said I didn't think
that would ever happen.
But it sounds really nice.
I will tuck it away
as another place to visit
when I close my eyes
to dream.
