Words and Verse
You must not speak of Germany to me! (Translation-German)
thi is a translation of one of Heine's exercises from the "Buch der Lieder" (Book of songs) which I have entitled "mußt du mir nie von Deutschland reden" Or "You must not speak of Germany to me!"
When I, whisked off by all your lovely kisses,
Lie in your arms, with sweet bliss lit.
Please do not speak of Germany with me,
This I can't stand- I've got reasons for it.
With Germany, leave me in peace, oh, I beg you!
You must not harass me and knowledge demand
Of homeland, kinsfolk and manner of living.
I've got reasons for it, you see - this I can't stand.
The oak-trees are green, and blue are the eyes
Of German women, they languish a bit
And whisper of love, of sweet hope, and of faith;
This I can't stand- I've got reasons for it.
Wenn ich, beseligt von schönen Küssen,
In seinen Armen mich wohl befinde,
Dann mußt du mir nie von Deutschland reden;
Ich kanns nicht vertragen-es hat seine Gründe.
Ich bitte dich, laß mich mit Deutschland in Frieden!
Du mußt mich nicht plagen mit ewigen Fragen
Nach heimat, Sippschaft und Lebensverhältnis;
Es hat seine Gründe- ich kanns nicht vertragen.
Die Eichen sind grün, und blau sind die Augen
Der deutschen Frauen, sie schmachten gelinde
Und seufzen von Liebe, Hoffnung und Glauben;
Ich kanns nicht vertragen-es hat seine Gründe.

And whisper of love, of sweet hope, and of faith;
This I can't stand- I've got reasons for it.
Wenn ich, beseligt von schönen Küssen,
