His flock have lost their beloved shepherd
A charismatic spiritual leader
He taught us well to heed the word
Karol Wojtyla truly was a faith builder
Born in nineteen-twenty in a small village in Poland
Before his ninth birthday, he lost his mother
At twelve years old he lost his brother Edmund
And in nineteen forty-one, he lost his father
As a handsome sports and art enthusiast
He wrote poetry and acted in plays
But chose to become an ordained priest
With a deep fervor for religion always
Appointed Archbishop of Krakow at age forty-two
Five years later he was elected to Cardinal
In nineteen seventy-eight he brought a new
Energy as pope that was without parallel
Less than one year after his consecration
He visited Knock Shrine for its centenary
And bestowed upon the Irish nation
The papal blessing throughout his itinerary
I never saw this Pontiff who journeyed far from Rome
But when I met Pope Paul VI. my spirit did soar
At an audience in the Vatican beneath St. Peters Dome
On a school journey that I made in nineteen sixty-four
In childhood Karol was hit by a truck and a car
He survived an assassin's attempt on his life
His philosophy was to strive to end all war
He sought peace for a world full of strife
Despite suffering Parkinson's disease and arthritis
The Holy Father kept a rigorous schedule
His travels around the world were numerous
Bowing down to kiss the earth upon his arrival
His fluency in eight languages
And his involvement in all humanity
Enabled him to communicate his message
That is a lesson for eternity.
