Uncle Grub And Auntie Jack
Uncle Grub
And Auntie Jack
Lived together
In an old bush shack.
Every morning
They stood to yawn,
Then stepped outside
To watch the dawn.
Their small echidna
Bristled sweet
And whispered for
An ant to eat.
Koala in the
Tree next door,
Smiled in dream
Between each snore.
Then Uncle Grub
Chopped some wood,
While Auntie Jack
Simply stood.
A possum waved
His friendly tail
To a gliding,
Smiling snail.
Uncle Grub
And Auntie Jack
Sipped sweet tea
And smiled right back.
A kookaburra
Called"Good day"
Then swooped and curled
And flew away.
Auntie Jack
Fed the ducks,
Collected eggs
Between the clucks.
Uncle grub
Milked the cows,
Fed the horse
And checked the sows.
A kangaroo
Hopped right by,
With her joey
Riding high.
Auntie Jack
Rode to town
On her horse
So big and brown.
On the way
She passed a creek
With an emu
Standing sleek.
She visited
Her best friend Sam,
Drank strong tea,
Ate scones with jam.
Back at home
Uncle Grub
Soaped up clean
Inside the tub.
He soaked in wait
For Auntie Jack
To help him scrub
His great big back.
When Auntie Jack
Came through the door,
She found him slumping
Deep in snore.
She woke him up
And dried him down
And put him in
His dressing gown.
Auntie Jack
Cooked a stew
And made a lovely
Damper too.
Uncle Grub
Made the tea,
Which was quite
A sight to see.
Outside, cicadas
Droned their song,
While lizards slowly
Slid along.
Warm inside
They both sat quiet
And watched the fire
Flicker bright.
Uncle Grub
And Auntie Jack
Were very happy
In their shack.
Joy Weare.
10th April, 2005.
