For A Special Lady…At…N.H.S. Direct!

N.H.S. Direct is a facility where we phone for medical advice if we are not sure of what to do.  They avise us!  We are supposed to do as per that advice. I didn't and that almost cost me my life.

I don't know how to tell it,
I don't know were to start,
So if you please, bear with me,
While I tell it from the heart!
I had a problem with a painful hip,
And my toes went dead and numb,
So I phoned the NHS Direct,
To tell the operator what I'd done.

The lady told me to get an ambulance...
And she insisted I do it then,
But I said no, no way would I,
So she reiterated this over and again!
As stubborn as I was,
I was also a little unnerved too,
I had such pain, and I had gone numb...
And didn't know what to do!

So the determined lady in question made no fuss,
But dialled 999 emergency services for me,
And this as I was on the phone with her,
I wasn't going to do it you see.
When I got to the hospital,
They said it was a good job I arrived,
Admitted me right there and then and so now -
The tale of how I survived.

A lot of things happened those 5 days,
And so my tale I will tell,
For this lady basically saved my life!
It's part her fault I'm here and well!
On the second day of being there,
My blood pressure went way too low,
My oxygen levels also dropped,
They told me all this, because I didn't know!

They fought for me for one solid hour -
Were it came to pass,
That I almost lost my life -
A life as fragile as crystal glass!
They did tests galore, put stuff inside me,
Injections everywhere,
But me, well I was out of it,
It's like I just wasn't even there!

My blood pressure dropped so suddenly,
And dangerously low indeed,
They had to sort it out real fast;
And they did it with lightening speed!
I'm told had this have happened at home,
And not in the hospital bed,
Then I can safely say to you,
I would certainly have been dead!

I would never have survived it,
And these angels saved my life,
All that dedication and determination,
And all that awful strife!
Had this lady not been determined...
To get an ambulance to me in sight!
Then all I can say to that is…
My life would have ended that night!

It turned out that I had septicaemia;
And my body was under attack,
They were striving to save my life;
And the wall was against my back!
I‘m on the mend; and this poem's not about;
‘Oh woe is me!'
It's about sending my heartfelt thanks,
To that determined lady you see!

I'm afraid I don't know her name,
But I am sure you can find that out!
And pass to her my humble thanks for my life,
For without a shadow of a doubt…
...She kept me alive by her actions;
Those actions saved my life that night!
I want her to know this, so she will know…
That for me, she fought the good fight!

Please strive to do your all,
And find and thank this woman for me,
For she truly played an important part,
On saving my life you see!
She was the first ball to roll that night -
Then others fell alongside,
And all together, they all had a part,
In saving me - the night I almost died.

Like I said, words will never be enough.
