Musings by The Poet Loriet

Wishing Well

Walking through the mall
Hand in hand
Toddler fingers grasping mine
We pass the fountain
Oh, can we please?
I dig through my bottomless purse
For copper pennies
He closes his eyes
Long eyelashes fluttering
Like butterflies on his cheek
Happy wishes fly
With the pennies
Wishes composed of
Action figures and fast food treats
Down to his last wish
The coin appears to be in slow motion
His words hang heavy in the air.
"I wish I didn't have to have surgery."
I met his father's eyes
Fighting the tear
That wants to slide down my cheek
We know
His wish can't be granted
We take his hands in our big ones
And walk in silence
To the parking lot.
