Lady in Grey

Lady in Grey

She was suddenly there at my side
Matching my steps stride for stride
Oh hello I heard her say
Please help make my day
Just smile and shake my hand
If you can't I'll understand
But perhaps we could walk
Maybe have a little talk
Down the road side by side
Only for a few short strides

She wore a grey coat that had seen some better times
And she looked so pathetic standing by that shop door
A woman who'd maybe taken so many hard knocks
But always got back up, proud and ready for more

There was still beauty in that face
Hard life hadn't taken every trace
Hello I said dear lady in grey
No don't go please just stay
I took her hand, took her finger tips
And gently pressed each to my lips
And I stayed by her side
Just for those few strides
Then each went on their way
Just a part of a different day
