Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst Massachusetts. Throughout her life she was known as the “Belle of Amherst.” She was the second daughter to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. She had an older brother, Austin and a younger sister Lavina. Her father was an orthodox Calvinist lawyer and treasurer of Amherst College. He served in the General Court of Massachusetts, the State Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Her mother was not a powerful woman. She was thought to not be emotionally accessible in Emily's life.
Through Dickinson's childhood her parents raised her to be a cultured Christian who one day would be responsible for a family of her own. Her father attempted to protect her by not allowing her to read books. Dickinson had the benefit of a good education. She attended Amherst Academy and then South Hadley Female Seminary. (Today it is known as Mount Holyoke College.) After the Civil War Emily began to restrict her life from outsiders. She was only 23. She dressed in only white and saw only a few visitors.
In Dickinson's life she took one trip to Philadelphia, one to Washington, and a few to Boston. During her trips she met two men that were influential in her life. In Philadelphia she met Reverend Charles Wadsworth. Wadsworth became a romantic figure in Dickinson's life. Wadsworth became a person that Dickinson could confine in with her writings. Like her, he was a solitary romantic. Many believe that Wadsworth was the main point in Dickinson's poems. Reverend Charles Wadsworth was also a married man.
